CHARACTER INFO
Name: Lieutenant Commander Data
Canon: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Age: N/A, Data is an android.
Appearance: Data is a six foot tall humanoid android, with very pale skin, yellow eyes, and brown hair. His build is average-to-slender, mimicking in appearance a human male in his prime. A photo is here.
History: Wiki Entry.
Canon Point: Mid Season 4, prior to the events of "Reunification pts 1 & 2."
Personality: How does one write a personality section for an android?
All right. First things first. Data has no emotions. Not even simulated ones. Which is a problem for him, and occasionally everybody around him. Human beings and most sentient races of the Federation are so reliant on emotions for their social cues. (Even Vulcans define themselves by their feelings, inasmuch as they control and suppress them.) Data, on the other hand, has none. As a result, he can sometimes come across as being socially inept. He tries so very hard to fit in and emulate humanity, but it's hard to be human when one has absolutely no capacity for emotion. That's the crux of Data's character: Feeling nothing, comprehending nothing but logical, causal connections.
The problem is, he absolutely, definitely, decidedly aches to be human. That's his ultimate aim. He has seen humanity, and decided that that's for him. He could have emulated Vulcans, Klingons or Andorians. But no. He was made in the image of humanity, his creator a human. So that is what he strives to be. Including all of humanity's strengths, foibles and problems. That he constantly falls short is no problem; Data is nothing if not persistent and resolute. Computers don't give up, after all.
After his activation, and being given his education (a rather quick process, compared to a human child), Data was left abandoned and deactivated on the planet Omnicron Theta by his creator, Dr. Noonien Soong. He was the latest in a string of humaniform androids, and the best of them all...but his predecessor and brother, Lore, had become a dangerous near-psychopath. When the crystalline entity attacked the colony on Omnicron Theta, Dr. Soong's wife, Juliana, encouraged her husband to abandon the planet and the colony there...and Data as well. She feared that Data would become another Lore. When he was discovered and reactivated by Starfleet officers several years later, Data made the choice to serve in the United Federation of Planets. His programming made it the logical choice, but more than that, he knew that his best chance at becoming more human was to surround himself with people of all races.
His time in Starfleet Academy was, again, relatively brief (it's easy to learn when you can download entire databanks of information nearly instantaneously). He had several detractors amongst the command structure, notably Bruce Maddox, who argued that Data was not sentient, and thus would have no loyalty to his ship and his crew. However, Data was still allowed to graduate once he proved himself to be competent and, in his own way, compassionate. His first assignment was aboard the USS Trieste, where after sixteen years of service, he was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Commander. His next assignment was aboard the USS Enterprise. It was there that he made his first real friend: Commander Geordi LaForge, head engineer of the ship. Although eventually he came to consider all of the command crew of the Enterprise his friends.
Upon being confronted with a dangerous situation, Data will act instantly, without fear or hesitation. It's the simpler things that cause him to stumble. He once asked the holodeck to teach him how to be funny, not making the connection that he was asking another computer.
He also has a tendency to ramble on about subjects, well after a human being would stop. This causes his captain, Jean-Luc Picard, to do that wonderful thing where his hand hits his forehead in such an amusing way. Data doesn't ramble out of a need to annoy, however; he just has all the information about a subject available, and figures that everybody around him will benefit from sharing it.
Data keeps his quarters sparsely furnished, with only a few treasured possessions scattered about. One of those treasured possessions is a holo-picture of Lieutenant Tasha Yar. Data had a sexual relationship with the woman, even if he could not feel the resulting bond and emotions. When Tasha died, Data could not grieve for her, and did not feel the lack. This underscored his lack of humanity once again, giving him an even greater reason to attempt to gain emotions.
Data has a pet cat named Spot, which he dotes on. Spot was named "ironically," as only an android can understand irony, since Spot is a common name for a dog. (And the cat's also a striped tabby...) His adoption of Spot was born out of a need for companionship, and a recognition of the fact that humans kept pets that they loved. (After he got his emotion chip in "Generations", Data actually cried upon finding Spot alive in the wreckage of the Enterprise.)
Data is also a "fan" of Sherlock Holmes, as well. He has read every single Holmes story, and actually identifies with Holmes on many levels. If he could be said to have favorite literature, the Holmes stories would be it, number one with a ridiculous hat.
In other words, over the many years of his activation, Data has slowly but surely started to adopt the various foibles of humanity, and every day he strives for more. It doesn't make him feel "good" per se, but it does ease his positronic pathways...
Abilities/Powers/Skills: Data is an android. He can withstand pressures and injuries that would kill a baseline human, and is capable of self-healing in a way that others cannot. He is basically a walking computer, with reaction times magnitudes faster than other humanoids. He is capable of stunning feats of logic, strength and intellectual capacity. There is apparently no upward limit of the data he is capable of processing without experiencing significant, noticeable lag. He can walk in vacuum without protective gear, and is also capable of withstanding the effects of most radiation.
Weaknesses: Data is incapable of feeling emotions or reacting from an emotional place. As such, any attempts to appeal to his "feels" will be met with a blank, polite, confused stare. He also occasionally needs to have his positronic brain re-balanced, like a tune-up for a luxury car. Please, only certified mechanics apply.
Special Items: If possible, I would like for Data to awaken with his Starfleet Comm badge attached to his uniform, and a phaser at sidearm. If not, then he arrives with no special items.
